First Week of First Grade!

Dear First Grade Families,

We made it through the first week of first grade! The kiddos did an AMAZING job in spite of the heat and humidity! This week, we have focused on building our classroom community, learning our classroom routines, and adjusting to the first grade schedule! I have been impressed by how fast the kiddos have been learning our classroom routines, such as unpacking in the morning, making a lunch choice, what to do when you are done with your work, and using the "quiet" signal.  In our classroom, we use a bell and a call back (Hocus Pocus... everybody focus!) We will continue to build our classroom community and practice our routines!

We have also read a LOT of books.  Some of the books we have read this week are:  Chrysanthemum, Wemberly Worried, What If Everybody Did That, All Are Welcome, Lacey Walker, Nonstop Talker, You're Finally Here, and First Day Jitters!

We have been to Art, Library, Music, and Computer Lab.  The students are anxiously awaiting their first P.E. class, which will be on Monday! (Don't forget your sneakers!)

Next week, we will be easing our way into reading, writing, and math! We will begin our first reading unit "Readers Build Good Habits" and start working on building our stamina for independent reading time and establish reading partnerships.  In writing, we will create a heart map and review the steps for writing a small moment story.  In math, we will continue working on our first unit, which focuses on counting strategies.

We will also be sharing our "All About Me" bags throughout the week during social studies time.

I wanted to share some pictures from our week.  Enjoy!

On Thursday, Ms. Gamache brought us popsicles! We went outside to enjoy them with Mrs. Yurick's class in the shade!

Some Reminders...
*Don't forget to send your child with a small, healthy snack each day!
